くらい or ぐらい: which one, and why nobody can give you a rule「くらい」と「ぐらい」: どちらでもいい理由と、数の意味だけではない使い方
くらい and ぐらい are the same word. Both are correct in almost every sentence, native speakers switch between them without noticing, and the only place the choice is genuinely fixed is after これ, それ, あれ and どれ — where ぐらい is what people actually say.
「くらい」と「ぐらい」は同じ言葉です。ほとんどの文でどちらも正しく、日本語話者も気にせず言いかえています。はっきり決まっているのは「これ・それ・あれ・どれ」のあとだけで、そこでは「ぐらい」が使われます。
This is a question I get from students far more often than it deserves, usually after a textbook or a forum post has implied there is a hidden rule. There mostly is not. What is worth your time is the second half of the word's job, which textbooks introduce as "about" and then never mention again — because くらい also measures extent, and that use produces sentences that make no sense if you are still reading it as a number word.
The basics
What does くらい do?
It softens a quantity into an approximation. Attach it directly after the number and counter.
三十分くらい待ちました。 — I waited about thirty minutes. (neutral, everyday) 千円ぐらいでした。 — It was around a thousand yen. (neutral, everyday)
Note that it goes after the amount, not before it. This trips up English speakers constantly, because English puts "about" in front: about thirty minutes, くらい thirty minutes ✗, thirty minutes くらい ✓.
So which reading do I use?
Whichever comes out. Both are written 位 or くらい/ぐらい in kana, both are standard, and the preference varies by speaker, by region and by the sound in front of it. If you want one habit that will never sound wrong: use ぐらい after numbers, and くらい at the start of a phrase.
どれぐらいかかりますか。 — About how long will it take? (polite, extremely common) これぐらいでいいですか。 — Is about this much okay? (polite, holding something up)
After これ・それ・あれ・どれ, the voiced ぐらい is what you will hear almost every time. This is the closest thing to a real rule in the whole topic.
Asking with どれくらい
This is the single most useful thing to take from this article, because it turns one word into a question for almost any measurement.
駅までどれぐらいですか。 — About how far is it to the station? (polite, asking a stranger) 日本語をどれぐらい勉強しましたか。 — About how long have you studied Japanese? (polite) 値段はどれぐらいですか。距離はどれぐらいですか。 — About how much is it? About how far is it? (polite — asking for a price or a distance)
One phrase covers distance, time, cost, quantity and duration. If you want the full set of ways to ask how long something takes, how long does it take in Japanese goes through the whole pattern.
Beyond the basics
The second job: measuring extent
Here is where it stops being "about". くらい can attach to a whole clause and mean "to the degree that", giving a yardstick for how much something is the case.
泣きたいくらい嬉しかった。 — I was so happy I could have cried. (literally: happy to the degree of wanting to cry) 立てないくらい疲れた。 — I was tired to the point of not being able to stand. (casual, emphatic)
Read as "about", these sentences are nonsense. Read as "to the extent of", they are ordinary spoken Japanese. This use is very common in conversation and in anime dialogue, and it is usually the first place a learner's comprehension quietly breaks.
The dismissive くらい
Attached to a noun, it can also mean "at least" or "merely" — shrinking the thing rather than measuring it.
挨拶くらいしなさい。 — At least say hello. (scolding, a parent or senior) それくらい自分でやって。 — Do that much yourself. (casual, mildly annoyed)
Same word, opposite feeling from the previous section: here it is saying the amount is trivially small. Tone and context decide which reading is intended, and the dismissive one almost always has an instruction or a complaint attached.
くらい vs ほど
ほど does both of these jobs too, and is the more formal of the two. For approximation they are interchangeable; for extent, ほど is stronger and more literary.
一時間ほどかかります。 — It takes about an hour. (polite, slightly formal — announcements, service staff) 死ぬほど疲れた。 — I'm dead tired. (casual, emphatic — stronger than 死ぬくらい)
ほど also has a construction くらい cannot copy: 〜ば〜ほど, "the more X, the more Y", which is covered in 〜ば〜ほど.
くらい vs 約 vs ごろ
Three ways to be vague, and they are not interchangeable.
- 約 — written and formal, goes before the number: 約三十分. You will see it in signage and news, rarely in speech.
- ごろ — approximation for a point in time: 三時ごろ, "around three o'clock".
- くらい — approximation for a quantity, including a length of time: 三時間くらい, "about three hours".
三時ごろ会いましょう。 — Let's meet around three. (a point in time) 三時間くらいかかります。 — It takes about three hours. (a duration)
三時くらい is not wrong, but ごろ is the natural choice for clock time. Mixing up a point and a duration is the actual error here, and if the duration half is shaky, Japanese duration counters covers the 〜間 that usually goes with it.
Common mistakes
- Putting it before the number. くらい三十分 is not a sentence. The word attaches to the back: 三十分くらい.
- Hunting for the くらい/ぐらい rule. There is no rule worth learning beyond これ・それ・あれ・どれ + ぐらい. Time spent on this is time not spent on the extent usage, which actually affects comprehension.
- Reading 泣きたいくらい as "about crying". When くらい follows a verb or adjective rather than a number, it means "to the extent that".
- Using くらい for clock time. 三時ごろ for a point in time, 三時間くらい for a duration.
- Assuming ほど is just formal くらい. For extent, ほど is also stronger. 死ぬほど and 死ぬくらい are not the same intensity.
The four vague words
| Word | Position | Vague about | Register |
|---|---|---|---|
| くらい / ぐらい | After the amount | Quantity, duration, extent | Everyday speech |
| ほど | After the amount | Quantity, extent (stronger) | Slightly formal, also literary |
| 約 | Before the number | Quantity | Written, announcements |
| ごろ | After the time | A point in time only | Everyday speech |
FAQ
Is ぐらい less polite than くらい? No. Neither is more polite than the other. Politeness in these sentences comes from the verb ending, not from this word.
Can I use くらい with any counter? Yes — people, hours, yen, kilometres, cups. It attaches after the number-plus-counter unit as a whole: 三人くらい, 五キロくらい.
Is 約 the safest choice for writing? For formal writing and signage, yes. In speech it sounds stiff, and in casual speech it is close to unusable.
What is the difference between どれくらい and いくら? いくら asks specifically about price or amount of money. どれくらい asks about any measurable quantity, including price. Asking a shop いくらですか is narrower and more natural than どれくらいですか — see いくらですか.
Does くらい ever mean "at least"? Yes, in the dismissive use — 挨拶くらいしなさい means "at least say hello". It reads as shrinking the thing, and usually comes with a complaint or an instruction.
Practice
Build each answer before opening it. Questions 4 and 5 are a pair — the same word, two different jobs.
1. Say "I waited about thirty minutes."
Show answer
三十分くらい待ちました — the word goes after the amount, never before it.
2. Something is wrong here: くらい千円でした。
Show answer
千円くらいでした — English puts "about" in front, Japanese puts くらい behind.
3. Ask politely how long it takes.
Show answer
どれぐらいかかりますか — どれ takes the voiced ぐらい almost every time.
4. Translate: 三十分くらい寝ました。
Show answer
I slept for about thirty minutes — after a number, くらい is approximation. This is the pair to question 5.
5. Translate: 立てないくらい疲れた。
Show answer
I was so tired I couldn't stand — after a verb, くらい means "to the extent that", not "about". This is the pair to question 4.
6. Say "let's meet around three o'clock."
Show answer
三時ごろ会いましょう — a point in clock time takes ごろ, not くらい.
7. Say "it takes about three hours."
Show answer
三時間くらいかかります — a duration takes くらい. Note 三時間, not 三時.
8. Make this sentence stronger: 死ぬくらい疲れた。
Show answer
死ぬほど疲れた — for extent, ほど is stronger than くらい.
9. Translate: 挨拶くらいしなさい。
Show answer
At least say hello — the dismissive use. Here くらい shrinks the thing rather than measuring it.
10. Which reading goes here: これ___でいいですか。
Show answer
ぐらい — これ・それ・あれ・どれ take the voiced form. This is the only place the choice is effectively fixed.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. This is the question students spend the most effort on for the least reward — and the extent usage, which nobody asks about, is the one that actually changes what you understand.

— I waited about thirty minutes. (neutral, everyday) 千円ぐらいでした。 — It was around a thousand yen. (neutral, everyday)
大事なのは、数のあとに付くことです。英語は前に置きます。英語話者がよくまちがえるところです。
どちらを使う?
出てきた方でいいです。どちらも正しく、人や地いきでちがいます。まようなら、数のあとは「ぐらい」、文のはじめは「くらい」にすると、まちがいになりません。
どれぐらいかかりますか。 — About how long will it take? (polite, extremely common) これぐらいでいいですか。 — Is about this much okay? (polite, holding something up)
「これ・それ・あれ・どれ」のあとは、ほとんど「ぐらい」です。これがいちばんルールに近いところです。
「どれくらい」で聞く
この記事でいちばん役に立つのはここです。一つの言い方で、いろいろなものを聞けます。
駅までどれぐらいですか。 — About how far is it to the station? (polite, asking a stranger) 日本語をどれぐらい勉強しましたか。 — About how long have you studied Japanese? (polite)
きょり、時間、お金、数、ぜんぶこれで聞けます。→ どれくらいかかりますか
もう少しくわしく
二つ目の仕事: どのくらいそうなのか
ここからは「だいたい」ではありません。文のあとに付いて「〜ほど」「〜くらいに」という意味になります。
泣きたいくらい嬉しかった。 — I was so happy I could have cried. (literally: happy to the degree of wanting to cry) 立てないくらい疲れた。 — I was tired to the point of not being able to stand. (casual, emphatic)
「だいたい」と読むと、意味が分かりません。「〜ほど」と読むと、ふつうの日本語です。会話にもアニメにもよく出ます。
小さく見せる「くらい」
名前のあとに付くと「せめて」「それだけ」という意味になります。
挨拶くらいしなさい。 — At least say hello. (scolding, a parent or senior) それくらい自分でやって。 — Do that much yourself. (casual, mildly annoyed)
同じ言葉ですが、気もちは反対です。ここでは「小さいこと」と言っています。たいてい、しかる言葉といっしょに出ます。
「くらい」と「ほど」
「ほど」も同じ二つの仕事をします。少しかたい言葉です。「だいたい」の意味なら同じです。「どのくらい」の意味なら、「ほど」の方が強いです。
一時間ほどかかります。 — It takes about an hour. (polite, slightly formal — announcements, service staff) 死ぬほど疲れた。 — I'm dead tired. (casual, emphatic — stronger than 死ぬくらい)
「ほど」にしかない形もあります。→ 〜ば〜ほど
「くらい」「約」「ごろ」
三つとも「だいたい」ですが、同じではありません。
- 約 — かたい書き言葉。数の前に置きます。「約三十分」。
- ごろ — 時こくの「だいたい」。「三時ごろ」。
- くらい — 数や長さの「だいたい」。「三時間くらい」。
三時ごろ会いましょう。 — Let's meet around three. (a point in time) 三時間くらいかかります。 — It takes about three hours. (a duration)
