Japanese abbreviations (略語): why almost everything becomes four syllables略語: どうして日本語は何でも4拍にするのか
Japanese shortens long words by keeping the first two morae of each part and throwing the rest away. スマートフォン → スマホ, 就職活動 → 就活, リモートコントロール → リモコン. The target length is almost always four morae, and the rule is regular enough that you can often decode an abbreviation you have never seen.
日本語は長い言葉を短くします。方法はかんたんです。前の部分から2拍、後ろの部分から2拍を取って、あとは捨てます。スマートフォン → スマホ、就職活動 → 就活、リモートコントロール → リモコン。できあがりはたいてい4拍です。ルールがあるので、知らない略語も意味が分かることがあります。
Learners usually meet these one at a time, as vocabulary, and never notice they are the same operation performed over and over. They are not exceptions to be memorised — they are a productive process that Japanese runs on almost any word that gets long enough to be annoying, including some you already know.
The basics
The four-mora rule
A mora is the beat Japanese counts in — roughly one kana, with ん, small っ and the second half of a long vowel each counting as their own beat. Most abbreviations land on exactly four of them.
パーソナルコンピューター → パソコン — personal computer → PC (パ・ソ・コ・ン = four morae) コンビニエンスストア → コンビニ — convenience store (コ・ン・ビ・ニ) エアコンディショナー → エアコン — air conditioner (エ・ア・コ・ン)
Count them out loud once and the pattern stops looking arbitrary. Four morae is comfortable in Japanese the way two syllables is comfortable in English; the language trims to fit that shape.
Take two from each half
When a word has two clear parts, the standard move is the first two morae of each, in order.
リモートコントロール → リモコン — remote control (リモ + コン) デジタルカメラ → デジカメ — digital camera (デジ + カメ) 就職活動 → 就活(しゅうかつ) — job hunting (就 + 活)
The kanji ones work identically, just with characters instead of kana: 就職 + 活動 keeps the first character of each. Once you see that, a lot of business vocabulary decodes itself — 婚活 is 結婚活動 (marriage hunting), 終活 is 終末活動 (preparing for the end of life), and the 〜活 suffix has become productive on its own. A few more of these live in Japanese work vocabulary.
Sometimes it is just the front
Single words with no obvious seam get chopped at the four-mora mark.
スマートフォン → スマホ — smartphone (not スマート — the ホ comes from フォン) アニメーション → アニメ — animation プロフェッショナル → プロ — professional
アニメ is the one worth pausing on. The English word "anime" is a Japanese abbreviation of an English word that was borrowed back into English, which means the entire global vocabulary for the medium is built on this grammar point.
Beyond the basics
脱サラ and the half-and-half compounds
Some abbreviations mix a kanji word with a clipped loanword, which is where learners lose the thread.
脱サラ(だつサラ) — quitting the salaried life to go independent (脱 "escape" + サラリーマン clipped to サラ) 就活サイト — a job-hunting site (an abbreviation used as a normal word, taking modifiers)
脱サラ is a good illustration of how far the process goes: サラリーマン is itself a Japanese coinage from English "salary man" — a wasei-eigo word — which then gets abbreviated again to サラ and compounded with a kanji. Three layers, one everyday word.
Initialism abbreviations: KY, OL, JK
A smaller family uses Latin letters, usually taken from the romaji of a Japanese phrase rather than from English.
- KY — 空気(KUUKI)読めない(YOMENAI), "can't read the room"
- OL — office lady, a wasei-eigo term for a woman in a clerical office job
- JK — 女子高生(JOSHI KOUSEI), high-school girl
These are informal and some of them are dated or loaded. KY had a moment and now sounds slightly of its era; JK carries connotations you probably do not want to invoke casually. Recognise them, and be careful producing them — the same caution that applies to slang like ヤバい.
Text and net abbreviations
Online, the clipping goes further and stops being four morae.
了解 → りょ/り — got it (casual messaging, りょ is already old-fashioned to younger users) ありがとう → あざす — thanks (very casual, spoken and written) おはようございます → おは/おはよっす — morning (casual)
These move fast and date quickly, which is the opposite of the stable four-mora abbreviations above. スマホ will still be スマホ in ten years; り may not survive the decade. Treat the first group as vocabulary and the second as something you read rather than write.
How does it sound in anime?
Anime is full of the stable ones — ケータイ (携帯電話, mobile phone), バイト (アルバイト, part-time job), コンビニ — used with no self-consciousness, because they are simply the normal words. Characters almost never say 携帯電話 or 就職活動 in full, and if one does it usually signals stiffness: an older character, a formal setting, or someone being deliberately correct. Fan vocabulary runs on the same engine, as in otaku slang, where 同人誌即売会 becomes 即売会 and then just イベント.
When not to abbreviate
The abbreviation is usually the neutral everyday word, not a casual variant — コンビニ is what a newsreader says. But a few are genuinely informal, and a handful are workplace-internal jargon that will not travel. The safe test is whether you have heard it from a stranger in public. If the only place you have met it is a group chat, keep it there.
お疲れ様です → お疲れ — thanks for your work (fine with peers, too casual upward)
Common mistakes
- Assuming the English original is understood. Say "personal computer" in Japan and many listeners will not connect it to パソコン. The abbreviation is the real word; the source phrase is trivia.
- Expanding an abbreviation to sound polite. 携帯電話 instead of ケータイ does not read as polite, it reads as stiff or elderly. Politeness lives in verb endings, not word length.
- Guessing the clip point from English stress. English shortens "smartphone" to "phone"; Japanese keeps スマ and takes ホ from the second half. The rule is positional, not semantic.
- Producing net abbreviations in speech. り and あざす are register-specific. Written by a learner in a first message, they land oddly.
- Reading 〜活 words as literal activities. 就活 is not "employment activity" in any useful sense; it is a specific institutional ritual with its own suits, seasons and vocabulary.

Practice
Answers are hidden — build yours first, then open. Questions 1 and 2 are a pair: the same rule applied to a loanword and to a kanji compound.
1. Abbreviate ファミリーレストラン using the two-from-each-half rule.
Show answer
ファミレス — ファミ from ファミリー, レス from レストラン. Four morae, as usual. Note that the ミ counts as its own beat even though ファ looks like two characters.
2. Abbreviate 就職活動 using the same rule.
Show answer
就活(しゅうかつ) — the first character of each half. This is the same operation as question 1, performed on kanji instead of kana.
3. What is スマホ short for, and why is it not スマフォ or スマート?
Show answer
スマートフォン — the clip takes スマ from the front and ホ from フォン, giving four morae. It is positional, not meaningful: the rule does not care that スマート is the adjective.
4. A colleague says 今日バイトなんだ. What are they telling you?
Show answer
They have a part-time job shift today — バイト is アルバイト, a loanword that did not come from English. Note it means part-time work specifically, not work in general.
5. Something is off here, in a message to a new client: 了解り。
Show answer
承知しました — り is casual messaging shorthand between friends. Even 了解 alone is too flat upward; the business form is 承知しました or かしこまりました.
6. Decode 婚活 from what you know about 就活.
Show answer
結婚活動 — looking for a marriage partner — the 〜活 suffix became productive after 就活, so it attaches to new first characters. 終活 (end-of-life preparation) is the same pattern again.
7. Why does 脱サラ have three layers to it?
Show answer
サラリーマン is wasei-eigo built from English, it is then clipped to サラ, and 脱 is prefixed to it — a borrowed coinage, abbreviated, then compounded with a kanji.
8. Your friend's older relative says 携帯電話 in full. What does that tell you?
Show answer
Register, not politeness — the full form reads as formal or generationally older. ケータイ is the ordinary neutral word, including in broadcast.
9. Which of these would you avoid writing to someone you have just met: コンビニ, あざす, パソコン?
Show answer
あざす — the other two are the standard everyday words. あざす is a heavily casual clipping of ありがとうございます and needs an existing friendly relationship.
10. The English word "anime" came from where, exactly?
Show answer
アニメーション clipped to アニメ, then borrowed back into English — a Japanese abbreviation of an English loanword, re-exported. The whole international vocabulary for the medium rests on this rule.
FAQ
Are abbreviations considered slang? Mostly no. The four-mora ones like コンビニ and パソコン are the standard words at every level of formality. Net clippings like り are slang and date quickly.
How do I know where a word gets cut? Count morae and look for a seam. Two-part words take two morae from each part; single long words get trimmed to about four from the front, occasionally borrowing a sound from the end as スマホ does.
Can I invent my own abbreviations? Native speakers do it constantly, and it will usually be understood in context — but it reads as playful rather than neutral, so it is a thing to do once you are comfortable rather than a shortcut while you are learning.
Is 略語 the right word for all of these? 略語 covers the whole category. The Latin-letter ones are sometimes called アルファベット略語, and net clippings get lumped in with 若者言葉 (young people's language), which is where the shelf life gets short.
Why does this matter for listening? Because the abbreviation is what you will actually hear. If you learned 携帯電話 from a textbook and ケータイ never appears in it, a perfectly ordinary sentence becomes unparseable at speed.
Do abbreviations keep the pitch accent of the original? Not reliably — they usually take their own accent as new words. This is one of the many places where hearing the word beats reasoning about it.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. This one surfaces in lessons as a single word a student cannot find in a dictionary — and the fix is never that word, it is showing them the rule, after which the next twenty decode themselves.

脱サラ(だつサラ) — quitting the salaried life to go independent (脱 "escape" + サラリーマン clipped to サラ) 就活サイト — a job-hunting site (an abbreviation used as a normal word, taking modifiers)
「脱サラ」を見ると、どこまで行くかが分かります。「サラリーマン」は日本で作られた英語風の言葉、つまり 和製英語 です。それをもう一度短くして「サラ」にして、漢字の「脱」を付けました。3つの層があって、毎日使う言葉です。
アルファベットの略語: KY・OL・JK
少ないですが、ローマ字を使う形もあります。英語からではなく、日本語のローマ字から取ります。
- KY — 空気(KUUKI)読めない(YOMENAI)
- OL — office lady。会社で事務をする女性を指す和製英語です
- JK — 女子高生(JOSHI KOUSEI)
どれもくだけた言葉です。古く感じるものもあります。「KY」は一時期とても流行して、今は少し古い感じです。「JK」は使う場面に注意がいります。意味が分かるだけでよく、自分から使わない方が安全です。「ヤバい」のようなスラング と同じ注意です。
メールとネットの略語
ネットでは、もっと短くなります。4拍のルールもなくなります。
了解 → りょ/り — got it (casual messaging, りょ is already old-fashioned to younger users) ありがとう → あざす — thanks (very casual, spoken and written) おはようございます → おは/おはよっす — morning (casual)
お疲れ様です → お疲れ — thanks for your work (fine with peers, too casual upward)
