なぜか, なんだか, なんとなく: three ways to say "for some reason

なぜか is なぜ ("why") with か stuck on the end, and that か is the same one that turns だれ into だれか — it takes a question word and makes the answer unknown on purpose.

Once you see that, a whole shelf of vocabulary unlocks at once. Japanese builds "somebody," "somewhere," "sometime" and "for some reason" out of the question words you already know, and the three ways to say "for some reason" differ by where the mystery is: outside you, inside you, or nowhere at all.

The basics

How なぜか is built

Question word + か Meaning
だれ (who) だれか somebody
どこ (where) どこか somewhere
いつ (when) いつか sometime
なに (what) なにか something
なぜ (why) なぜか for some reason

The pattern is the same every time: the か leaves the answer blank. If the question words themselves are still shaky, なに, どこ, いつ is the place to start.

なぜか彼かれは来こなかった。 — For some reason, he didn't come. (plain; no explanation offered) なぜか涙なみだが出でてきた。 — For some reason, tears came out. (plain; something happened that you cannot account for)

Where does it go in the sentence?

At the front of the clause, or directly before the surprising part. Both are natural:

なぜかこの店みせだけ空あいている。 — For some reason, only this shop is empty. (polite-neutral) この店みせだけなぜか空あいている。 — Same meaning, the mystery lands harder on 空あいている. (plain)

It is an adverb, so it takes no particle. ×なぜかが and ×なぜかは do not exist.

なぜか is not a question

This is the trap. なぜ asks. なぜか states that there is no answer.

なぜ来こなかったの? — Why didn't you come? (a question, casual) なぜか来こなかった。 — For some reason, they didn't come. (a statement)

Saying なぜか with question intonation will confuse people, because you have built a sentence that announces the answer is unavailable and then asked for it.

Beyond the basics

なんだか: the mystery is inside you

なんだか (or なんか in casual speech) marks a feeling you cannot explain. It attaches to your own internal state, not to events in the world.

なんだか眠ねむい。 — I feel sleepy, somehow. (plain; you don't know why) なんだか嫌いやな予感よかんがする。 — I've got a bad feeling about this, somehow. (plain; the classic anime line) なんだか懐なつかしいですね。 — It feels nostalgic somehow, doesn't it. (polite)

Compare the two directly:

なぜか電気でんきがついていた。 — For some reason the light was on. (an external fact with no explanation) なんだか落ち着おちつかない。 — I feel restless somehow. (an internal state with no explanation)

Swapping them is not a grammar error so much as a strange claim. なんだか電気でんきがついていた suggests the light being on is a mood you are experiencing.

Note that casual なんか is also the everyday filler meaning "like," which is a different job for the same word — see Japanese filler words.

なんとなく: there is no mystery, there is just no reason

This is the one learners skip, and it is the most useful of the three. なんとなく means you did something without a particular reason — not that the reason is hidden, but that there was never one.

なんとなく買かっちゃった。 — I just sort of bought it. (casual; no reason, and that's the honest answer) どうして日本語にほんごを始はじめたんですか。— なんとなくです。 — Why did you start Japanese? — No particular reason. (polite; a complete, normal answer)

なんとなくです is a perfectly acceptable answer to a real question in Japanese, in situations where English speakers feel obliged to invent something. It is worth having ready.

The split is: なぜか is about the world, なんだか is about your feelings, なんとなく is about your choices.

どういうわけか: the emphatic one

どういうわけか is literally "what kind of reason — unknown," and it carries more weight than なぜか. It signals that the speaker finds the thing genuinely odd, and it shows up in storytelling and in writing.

どういうわけか、彼女かのじょはその話はなしをしたがらない。 — For whatever reason, she doesn't want to talk about it. (plain, written or narrative) どういうわけか毎回まいかい私わたしだけ呼よばれない。 — For some reason it's always only me who doesn't get invited. (plain; mild complaint)

Use it when なぜか feels too light for how strange the thing is. In a formal report, 理由りゆうは不明ふめいだが ("the reason is unclear, but") does the same job with no emotion attached.

The near neighbours

どうしてか分わからないけど、好すきなんだ。 — I don't know why, but I like it. (casual; spells out the not-knowing) 気きのせいか、少すこし寒さむい。 — Maybe it's my imagination, but it's a bit cold. (the mystery is "am I imagining this") 疲つかれているせいか、集中しゅうちゅうできない。 — Perhaps because I'm tired, I can't concentrate. (a reason is offered, tentatively)

That last pattern, 〜せいか, is the opposite of なぜか: it means you do have a candidate explanation but are not certain. The certain version is in のせいで and のおかげで.

Common mistakes

  • Using なぜか to ask a question. It is a statement that no reason is available. The question is なぜ or どうして.
  • Using なぜか for your own feelings. なぜか悲かなしい is not wrong, but なんだか悲かなしい is what a Japanese speaker says. なぜか fits events; なんだか fits moods.
  • Answering どうして? with なぜか. The natural answer is なんとなく — "no particular reason."
  • Attaching particles. なぜか, なんだか and なんとなく are adverbs. No が, no は, no を.
  • Confusing なんか (filler, "like") with なんだか (somehow). In fast speech they blur, but in writing they are different words doing different jobs.
  • Using どういうわけか in a formal report. It carries the speaker's surprise. A report wants 理由りゆうは不明ふめいだが.

The three at a glance

Word Where the mystery is Typical sentence English
なぜか An event in the world なぜか彼かれは来こなかった For some reason
なんだか Your own feeling なんだか眠ねむい Somehow, sort of
なんとなく Nowhere — no reason existed なんとなく買かった No particular reason
どういうわけか An event, and it is genuinely odd どういうわけか私わたしだけ呼よばれない For whatever reason
〜せいか You have a guess, unconfirmed 疲つかれているせいか Perhaps because

Practice

Answers are hidden — say yours first, then open. Questions 2 and 3 are a pair: the same blank, once about the world and once about you.

1. Say: "For some reason, he didn't come."

Show answer

なぜか彼かれは来こなかった。 — An event with no explanation takes なぜか. It is an adverb, so no particle follows it.

2. Fill in: ( )電気でんきがついていた。

Show answer

なぜか。 — The light being on is a fact about the world, not a feeling you are having.

3. Fill in: ( )落ち着おちつかない。

Show answer

なんだか。 — Restlessness is your own internal state, so the mystery is inside you. なぜか here would sound like you are reporting on someone else.

4. Someone asks どうして日本語にほんごを始はじめたんですか。 You have no particular reason. Answer.

Show answer

なんとなくです。 — A complete, natural answer. Japanese does not require you to invent a reason.

5. What is the difference between なぜ and なぜか?

Show answer

なぜ asks; なぜか says there is no answer. — The か is the same one in だれか and どこか: it makes the answer deliberately unknown.

6. Build "somewhere," "sometime" and "somebody" from question words.

Show answer

どこか・いつか・だれか。 — Same pattern as なぜか. The question word supplies the category and か blanks out the answer.

7. Strengthen this: なぜか毎回まいかい私わたしだけ呼よばれない。

Show answer

どういうわけか毎回まいかい私わたしだけ呼よばれない。 — どういうわけか carries more of the speaker's "this is genuinely strange," which suits a complaint.

8. Is なぜかは正ただしいですか a valid phrase?

Show answer

No — なぜか takes no particle. — It is an adverb. ×なぜかが and ×なぜかは do not exist.

9. Say: "Perhaps because I'm tired, I can't concentrate."

Show answer

疲つかれているせいか、集中しゅうちゅうできない。 — 〜せいか is the opposite of なぜか: you do have a candidate reason, you are just not sure of it.

10. Say the classic anime line: "I've got a bad feeling about this, somehow."

Show answer

なんだか嫌いやな予感よかんがする。 — A feeling with no cause you can name, so なんだか. 予感よかんがする is the fixed phrase for a premonition.

FAQ

Is なぜか formal or casual? Neutral. It works in conversation and in writing. なんだか and なんとなく lean casual, and どういうわけか leans narrative.

Can I just use なんか for all of these? In fast casual speech people do blur なんか and なんだか, but なんか's main job is the filler "like." Using it for everything makes you sound vague rather than natural.

Is なんとなく rude as an answer? No. It is honest and extremely common. What sounds odd in Japanese is inventing an elaborate reason for a small choice.

Does なぜ sound stiff compared with どうして? Slightly. どうして is the everyday spoken "why," なぜ is a little more formal and more common in writing. なんで is the most casual of the three.

How do I say "I don't know why"? なぜか分わからない or どうしてか分わからない. Both are natural, and both keep the か that blanks out the answer.

Can なぜか start a sentence on its own? Yes, and it very often does. Front position is the most common placement, with the effect of flagging the whole sentence as unexplained before it arrives.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. なんとなく is the one I push students to actually use — English speakers feel they owe an explanation for every small choice, and Japanese gives you a single word that means "there wasn't one."
