Japanese words for beautiful: きれい, 美うつくしい, かわいい and what each one claims

きれい is the everyday word and also means clean; 美うつくしい is beauty observed from a distance, and is rarer in speech than learners expect; かわいい is a different claim altogether, about charm rather than beauty. Using 美うつくしい where a Japanese speaker would say きれい is the most common mistake in the set.

This is one of the first places a learner's Japanese starts sounding like a translation. 美うつくしい is what the dictionary offers for "beautiful", so it gets used everywhere — and it lands as slightly literary, like saying "resplendent" about a nice dinner.

The basics

きれい — the everyday one

Pretty, clean, neat, tidy. It covers visual appeal and cleanliness, which is not two meanings so much as one idea: nothing is out of place.

きれいな景色けしきですね。 — What a beautiful view. (polite — the default) 部屋へやをきれいにしました。 — I tidied the room. (polite — the "clean" sense)

It is a な-adjective despite ending in い, which catches almost everyone: きれいな人ひと, きれいじゃない, きれいでした. The final い is part of the word, not an adjective ending — the same trap as 有名ゆうめい and 嫌きらい, covered in い-adjectives vs な-adjectives.

美うつくしい — beauty with distance

Genuinely beautiful, in a way that invites contemplation. It is an い-adjective and it is real, current Japanese — it is just less frequent in conversation than learners assume.

美うつくしい音楽おんがくですね。 — That's beautiful music. (polite, a little formal) 美うつくしい日本語にほんごを話はなす。 — To speak beautiful Japanese. (neutral)

The gap is register, not correctness. A Japanese speaker seeing a nice sunset says きれい; 美うつくしい appears in writing, in praise that is meant to carry weight, and about things like language, music and landscape when the speaker wants the compliment to be noticed.

かわいい — not beautiful

Charming, endearing, sweet. It is not a weaker version of beautiful; it is a different axis, and it can apply to things that are not attractive at all.

かわいい! — So cute! (casual — a complete sentence) かわいい字じですね。 — What lovely handwriting. (polite — cute, rounded)

かわいい carries warmth and a slight sense of protectiveness. It is used about people, animals, objects, handwriting, behaviour and, crucially, about adults — calling a grown woman かわいい is common and generally positive in Japan in a way its English translation does not capture.

Beyond the basics

Which one for a person?

This is the practical question, and the answer depends more on who is speaking to whom than on the person being described.

  • きれい — polished, put-together. Safe and common for an adult.
  • かわいい — charming, sweet. Extremely common, including between adult women.
  • 美うつくしい — heavy. Sincere and a little formal; it can sound like a line from a film.

きれいですね。 — You look lovely. (polite — the safe compliment)

A caution that applies regardless of the word: complimenting a stranger's appearance is less routine in Japan than in some countries, and from a man to a woman he does not know well it can read as an approach rather than as politeness. Complimenting clothes, an accessory or handwriting is a much safer route to the same warmth.

かっこいい — the other compliment

かっこいい means cool, sharp, impressive. It is the word for a person who looks put-together in a confident way, and it is not gendered in practice: it is used about men, women, cars, guitar solos and well-executed anything.

かっこいいですね。 — That's really cool. (polite)

If you want one compliment word to carry around for things that are not cute, this is it.

綺麗きれい vs 奇麗きれい vs きれい

Three ways to write the same word. 綺麗きれい is the common kanji form, 奇麗きれい is an older variant, and きれい in kana is by far the most frequent in casual writing — which is convenient, because the kanji are not on the standard list and most people do not write them by hand.

美び in compounds

Once you have 美うつくしい, the 美び character shows up everywhere and is usually worth recognising.

  • 美人びじん(びじん) — a beautiful woman
  • 美容院びよういん(びよういん) — hair salon
  • 美味おいしい(おいしい) — delicious
  • 美術館びじゅつかん(びじゅつかん) — art museum

美容院びよういん is a trap for a different reason: it is one beat away from 病院びょういん (びょういん), hospital, and confusing them is a classic. That pair is in 人魚にんぎょ and 人形にんぎょう, along with the rest of the long-vowel problem.

The compliment you will actually receive

Japanese responses to compliments usually deflect rather than accept, which surprises people who expect a simple thank-you.

そんなことないです。 — Oh, not at all. (polite — the standard deflection)

Accepting flatly with ありがとうございます is increasingly common and perfectly fine, especially with non-Japanese speakers, but the deflection is what you will hear most. It is modesty as a social form, not disagreement.

Common mistakes

  • Treating きれい as an い-adjective. きれいな人ひと, きれいじゃない, きれいでした. Never きれくない.
  • Using 美うつくしい as the default for "beautiful". For an everyday nice-looking thing, きれい is what people say.
  • Reading かわいい as "not quite beautiful". It is a separate axis, and about an adult it is a genuine compliment.
  • Missing the "clean" meaning of きれい. きれいにしてください means tidy up, not make it pretty.
  • Complimenting a stranger's face. Clothes, handwriting, an accessory — the same warmth with none of the risk.

The compliment set

Word Claims Type Typical use
きれい Pretty; clean, tidy な-adjective The everyday default
美うつくしい Beautiful, contemplative い-adjective Writing, weighty praise
かわいい Cute, charming い-adjective People, animals, objects
かっこいい Cool, sharp い-adjective Anything done well
素敵すてき Lovely, wonderful な-adjective Warm, slightly adult

FAQ

Which word should I use most? きれい. It is the everyday default for anything good-looking, and it doubles as "clean".

Is かわいい childish? No. It is used by and about adults constantly, and about objects, food and handwriting as well as people.

What does 素敵すてき mean? Lovely, wonderful — warm and a little more adult than かわいい. 素敵すてきな人ひと is a genuinely nice thing to be called.

Why is きれい a な-adjective? Because the い is part of the root word rather than an adjective ending. 有名ゆうめい and 嫌きらい behave the same way; it is a spelling coincidence, not a rule you can predict.

How do I respond to a compliment? そんなことないです deflects, ありがとうございます accepts. Both are fine; the deflection is more traditional and still the most common.

Is it rude to call a man かわいい? Not rude, but it says something specific — endearing rather than impressive. かっこいい is the word for impressive.

I'm Yuuki, a Japanese teacher based in Tokyo. I've taught on italki as a Top 1% teacher and watched over 1,500 anime. 美うつくしい is the word students reach for and native speakers rarely do — swapping it for きれい is one of the smallest changes that makes someone's Japanese sound like Japanese.
